How should I choose a name for my business?

Video 16 in the Business Fundamentals cheat sheet is all about naming your business & registering your website. There are lots of tips provided to help you when coming up with your business name. Here is a summary of the most important considerations and some additional tips:

Consider future expansion - right from the very start you should leave your business name broad enough to work even with your future expansion. It should make sense for the niche you are going into right now, but be careful not to be too specifically focused on one product in case you expand your product range further in the future.

Add a generic descriptor to a niche keyword - for example if you were in the pet niche you could name yourself Elite Pet Supplies. Elite is the generic descriptor and pet supplies is the niche keyword.

Check it is not already used - firstly search online for any businesses using the name that you are looking to use. Make sure that you will not be clashing with a competitor. Secondly, check companies house to make sure that no one has used the name as their registered business name as they will be protected by law to be the only company to use that name.

Avoid hyphens in your domain - this will keep your website easy to access for customers.

Keep it fun and memorable! Be creative and write down fun and memorable descriptor words to use for your business. The more memorable your name is, the more people will be able to remember your name and visit your store again and again to place orders.
